The event aimed to provide cities with a comprehensive understanding of the EU Nature Restoration Regulation, including its key provisions, obligations and impact on urban planning. Participants explored innovative green infrastructure and nature-based solutions for urban restoration while discovering how Copernicus satellite services can support cities in monitoring canopy cover and green spaces. Through real-world case studies, attendees gained insights into successful urban nature restoration projects and engaged in discussions on common challenges, practical solutions and available funding opportunities to drive sustainable change.
Representatives of the European Commission highlighted the importance of nature restoration for urban sustainability. The participants then gained a thorough overview of the regulation, learning about its key provisions and how it directly impacts cities. The workshop also featured case studies from leading cities. From wetland restoration in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain) to the ecological management of public spaces in Leuven (Belgium), cities are applying nature-based solutions through practical experience and are showcasing successful green infrastructure and biodiversity strategies. In the EU support session, attendees were introduced to Copernicus geospatial services, which provide valuable data for monitoring urban greenery and tree canopy cover. The event concluded with interactive discussions, where participants shared challenges, explored solutions and identified funding opportunities to implement nature-based solutions across European cities.
