The criteria that ensure the environmental excellence of detergents in the EU Ecolabel cleaning products group are being updated. To this end, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) is seeking input from relevant stakeholders, including manufacturers, companies along the supply chain, consumer organisations, NGOs and citizens.
The first draft preliminary and technical reports are online, providing the necessary background information on the revision of the requirements, together with a first draft proposal for the revised criteria.
As part of the ongoing consultation, the first multi-stakeholder meeting will be held online on 12-13 March 2024. Registration is open to stakeholders interested in joining the meeting or in providing comments on the documents.
After registering for the meeting, an agenda with connection details will be provided.
The deadline for submitting written comments is 3 April 2024.

The existing EU Ecolabel criteria for home and professional cleaning products were adopted in 2017. These criteria limit the use of hazardous substances, and require sustainable sourcing of raw materials, promote the use of biodegradable ingredients, minimum and recycled/recyclable packaging, guaranteed performances even at low temperatures, and guidance for the proper use of a product to avoid overdosing.
The revision process is taking into account changing economic, technological and legislative circumstances, improved scientific knowledge, and the experiences of stakeholders.
