From Industrial Engineer to Sustainability Champion

Could you briefly introduce yourself and explain how you became involved in sustainability projects?

I am an industrial engineer from Valencia. Most of my professional career has been in the private sector, specifically managing industrial processes. However, I have always been drawn to sustainability and the opportunity to contribute to environmental improvement. This passion led me to join València Clima i Energia, where I apply my knowledge to projects focused on energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

Transforming Urban Environments: The Urbanew Project

Can you tell us more about the Urbanew project that Valencia is part of and its objectives?

Valencia is one of several cities involved in a broader consortium working to transform urban environments to be more energy-efficient and sustainable. The project focuses on reducing energy consumption in buildings, which account for around 30% of the city’s carbon emissions. Our initiative aims to retrofit homes and promote sustainable practices to create a more energy-efficient and environmentally resilient urban infrastructure.

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Opportunities

What are some of the main challenges you encountered with this project?

One significant challenge in Valencia is its moderate climate. Historically, this has led to the construction of poorly insulated homes, which struggle to maintain comfort during both winter and summer. Addressing this through energy-efficient renovations is essential, but raising awareness about the benefits of such improvements, both in terms of comfort and energy savings, remains equally challenging. However, we see this as an opportunity to educate homeowners and promote sustainable practices.

The Power of Green Spaces

How important are green spaces to Valencia’s transformation?

Green spaces are fundamental to our city's transformation, both environmentally and socially. From an environmental perspective, they help regulate urban temperatures by absorbing heat during the day and mitigating the ‘urban heat island’ effect. Socially, they provide areas where residents can gather, fostering a sense of community. They also enhance the livability of the city and make it more resilient to climate challenges.

A Testament to Valencia's Efforts

What does it mean for Valencia to have been awarded the European Green Capital title?

This recognition is a testament to Valencia's efforts in its ecological transition. It brings international attention to our work and creates opportunities to exchange knowledge with other cities. The award motivates us to continue advancing our sustainability goals and our green efforts.

Collaboration and Community Engagement

What other green initiatives have had a positive impact on the city?

Our collaboration with professionals from various sectors—public administrators, university researchers, and private architects—has been instrumental in developing solutions for energy-efficient building renovations. We have formed working groups that enable these experts to exchange ideas and collaborate effectively. Another impactful initiative is our outreach to homeowners, educating them on the benefits of energy efficiency. Many are unaware of the financial savings and environmental advantages they can gain from minor improvements.

Empowering Citizens to Take Action

How can the citizens of Valencia become more actively involved in these green initiatives?

Citizens play a crucial role, but it is essential that they are informed and feel empowered to act. Many people are unaware of the resources available to them, such as financial support for energy-efficient renovations. Therefore, one of our objectives is to raise awareness and provide clear, accessible information. We are also creating more spaces for dialogue within communities, where residents can learn, share experiences, and participate in sustainability projects.
